House of Chains Audiobook is the fourth of ten audiobooks in Canadian author Steven Erikson’s high fantasy series the Malazan Book of the Fallen. According to Erikson, he wrote House of Chains on a Psion 7 word processor.

Steven Erikson plunges the reader into an immersive, expansive, and mysterious world that is virtually devoid of fantasy cliche and full of memorable characters, exciting action, complex plotting, and glimpses of humor.

His writing is vivid and compelling, never overtly moralistic, and leaves the reader satisfied and with a distinct impression that there was much more going on than the author chose to reveal.

So begins the epic new audiobook of war, intrigue, magic and betrayal from a writer now acknowledged as one of the most original, imaginative and exciting storytellers in modern fantasy.

Highly recommended!

Plot Summary

In Northern Genabackis, a raiding party of savage tribal warriors descends from the mountains into the southern flatlands. Their intention is to wreak havoc amongst the despised lowlanders, but for the one named Karsa Orlong, it marks the beginning of what will prove an extraordinary destiny.

Some years later, it is the aftermath of the Chain of Dogs. Tavore, the new Adjunct to the Empress, has arrived in the last remaining Malazan stronghold on Seven Cities. New to command, she must hone twelve thousand soldiers, mostly raw recruits but for a handful of veterans of Coltaine’s legendary march, into a force capable of challenging the massed hordes of Sha’ik’s Whirlwind who lie in wait at the heart of the Holy Desert.

But waiting is never easy. The seer’s warlords are locked in a power struggle that threatens the very soul of the rebellion, while Sha’ik herself suffers, haunted by the knowledge of her nemesis: her own sister, Tavore.

And so begins this awesome new chapter in Steven Erikson’s acclaimed Malazan Book of the Fallen…

Reviews

House of Chains Audiobook mp3 is another fantastic addition to The Malazan book of the Fallen. This audiobook started off a little different than the previous installments.

I loved the epic sprawling world created here, and I want to go right into the next book and get more from this series.

Narration

Ralph Lister doesn’t just narrate this book – he performs it. His cadence and delivery make for a very easy listen, and his ability to establish different and distinct voices for the characters throughout the book is superb.

The voices matched the dark, hard and gritty tone of the audiobook. He pronounces a lot of the vocabulary of the world a little differently than I have in the past, but I wasn’t too put out by that.
