The Bonehunters Audiobook is the sixth of ten audiobooks in Canadian author Steven Erikson’s high fantasy series the Malazan Book of the Fallen.

This is another epic installment to the Malazan series. The Bonehunters hits all the marks – wildly creative, eloquent in prose, frantic in its action, and a scope almost unparalleled in fantasy fiction. Erikson is in full stride on this one, and for fans who have made it this far, it is a crazy and fulfilling ride.

Highly recommended!

Plot Summary

The Seven Cities Rebellion has been crushed. Sha’ik is dead. One last rebel force remains, holed up in the city of Y’Ghatan and under the fanatical command of Leoman of the Flails.

The prospect of laying siege to this ancient fortress makes the battle-weary Malaz 14th Army uneasy. For it was here that the Empire’s greatest champion Dassem Ultor was slain and a tide of Malazan blood spilled. A place of foreboding, its smell is of death.

But elsewhere, agents of a far greater conflict have made their opening moves.

The Crippled God has been granted a place in the pantheon, a schism threatens and sides must be chosen. Whatever each god decides, the ground rules have changed, irrevocably, terrifyingly and the first blood spilled will be in the mortal world.

A world in which a host of characters, familiar and new, including Heboric Ghost Hands, the possessed Apsalar, Cutter, once a thief now a killer, the warrior Karsa Orlong and the two ancient wanderers Icarium and Mappo – each searching for such a fate as they might fashion with their own hands, guided by their own will.

If only the gods would leave them alone. But now that knives have been unsheathed, the gods are disinclined to be kind. There shall be war, the war in the heavens. And, the prize? Nothing less than existence itself…

About the Author

Steven Erikson (born October 7, 1959) is the pseudonym of Steve Rune Lundin, a Canadian novelist. His best-known work is the completed ten-book fantasy series Malazan Book of the Fallen, which by 2006 had sold over 250,000 copies.

SF Site has called the series “the most significant work of epic fantasy since Donaldson’s Chronicles of Thomas Covenant,” and Fantasy Book Review described it as “the best fantasy series of recent times.”

Reviews

With The Bonehunters Audiobook mp3, Steven Erikson has cemented himself as an irreplaceable author for the genre of epic and military fantasy. This audiobook marks the first time Erikson converged almost all the plotlines, characters, and world-building within his previous five books into one.

More great new characters and increasing revelations about the many introduced in previous audiobooks, making this series often feel like some sort of reunion. As I have said before, the care with which Erickson paints not just his characters but the emotional and antagonistic interactions between them is of a caliber rarely found in your normal Sci-Fi or fantasy novel.

Battles, betrayals, comedy, and magic of the highest craft decorate a rich storyline whilst slowly steering this epic towards a looming conclusion.

This fantasy series continues to be unique and amazing. If you haven’t listened to any of Malazan’s Book of the Fallen, you need to. It is worth the journey.

Narration

Michael Page doesn’t just narrate this book – he performs it. His cadence and delivery make for a very easy listen, and his ability to establish different and distinct voices for the characters throughout the book is superb.

The voices matched the dark, hard and gritty tone of the audiobook. He pronounces a lot of the vocabulary of the world a little differently than I have in the past, but I wasn’t too put out by that.
