The Crippled God Audiobook is the 10th of ten audiobooks as well as the final audiobook in Canadian author Steven Erikson’s high fantasy series the Malazan Book of the Fallen. It is a truly worthy ending for what is arguably the best series in the epic fantasy genre.
Now, at the end of the final installment looking back, I couldn’t be more pleased. Erikson delivered on his promise of an epic fantasy series, and then went a little farther. This series has fixed itself atop the list of my favorite Fantasy series
If you’ve stuck it out this long, then this final audiobook delivers the payoff and the satisfaction that you wanted. Be patient, and you shall be rewarded.
The Bonehunters march for Kolanse, led by Adjunct Tavore. This woman with no gifts of magic, deemed plain, unprepossessing, displaying nothing to instill loyalty or confidence, will challenge the gods – if her own mutinous troops don’t kill her first.
Her enemy, the Forkrul Assail, seek to cleanse the world, to annihilate everything. In the realm of Kurald Galain, home to the long lost city of Kharkanas, a refugees commanded by Yedan Derryg, the Watch, await the breaching of Lightfall, and the coming of the Tiste Liosan. In this war they cannot win, they will die in the name of an empty city and a queen with no subjects.
Elsewhere, the three Elder Gods, Kilmandaros, Errastas and Sechul Lath, work to shatter the chains binding Korabas, the Otataral Dragon. Against her force of utter devastation, no mortal can stand. At the Gates of Starvald Demelain, the Azath House sealing the portal is dying. Soon will come the Eleint, dragons, and a final cataclysm.
About the Author
Steven Erikson (born October 7, 1959) is the pseudonym of Steve Rune Lundin, a Canadian novelist. His best-known work is the completed ten-book fantasy series Malazan Book of the Fallen, which by 2006 had sold over 250,000 copies.
SF Site has called the series “the most significant work of epic fantasy since Donaldson’s Chronicles of Thomas Covenant,” and Fantasy Book Review described it as “the best fantasy series of recent times.”
Epic, masterful, and scintillating in every sense of these words – The Crippled God Audiobook mp3 is an unforgettable magnum opus that concludes Steven Erikson’s genre-defining Series: Malazan Book of the Fallen.
The word epic does not even seem to do any justice to this expansive tale and the world in which it takes place. Erikson actually did a good job of wrapping up the numerous different character stories, and in ways that never felt forced nor distracted from the fast-paced conclusion.
The violence in this series is brutal and visceral, but never gratuitous. The battle and action scenes are in equal measures sweeping and intimate; cinematic scenes of clashing soldiers and sorcerous conflagration seen from a wide-angle, and combat sequences in close confines, moving from one squad, or an individual, to another.
This fantasy series continues to be unique and amazing. If you haven’t listened to any of Malazan’s Book of the Fallen, you need to. It is worth the journey.
Michael Page doesn’t just narrate this book – he performs it. His cadence and delivery make for a very easy listen, and his ability to establish different and distinct voices for the characters throughout the book is superb.
The pace and tone are good and the book itself has decent pacing so part of his job is done for him.
