Heretics of Dune Audiobook Streaming Online & Download Free

Heretics of Dune Audiobook is a science fiction story by American writer Frank Herbert, the fifth audio in his Dune Chronicles of eight novels. It gives a much-needed expansion of the Sisterhood as a society and doesn’t as well keep the mystery for the next audiobook.

Heretics takes place some 1,500 years after the brunt of what we read in God Emperor of Dune, and right out of the gate Herbert hits you with a boatload of tantalizing worldbuilding. This is not the universe we knew when Leto ruled, though his shadow hangs over it still…

If you’re a big fan of Dune Chronicles, don’t hesitate to get it. Another fantastic entry in one of the greatest science fiction series of all time!

Highly recommended!

Plot Summary

Leto Atreides, the God Emperor of Dune, is dead. In the fifteen hundred years since his passing, the Empire has fallen into ruin. The great Scattering saw millions abandon the crumbling civilization and spread out beyond the reaches of known space. The planet Arrakis-now called Rakis-has reverted to its desert climate, and its great sandworms are dying.

Now, the Lost Ones are returning home in pursuit of power. And as factions vie for control over the remnants of the Empire, a girl named Sheeana rises to prominence in the wastelands of Rakis, sending religious fervor throughout the galaxy. For she possesses the abilities of the Fremen sandriders-fulfilling a prophecy foretold by the late God Emperor…

About the Author

Frank Herbert (1920-86) was born in Tacoma, Washington, and worked as a reporter and later editor of a number of West Coast newspapers before becoming a full-time writer.

His first SF story was published in 1952 but he achieved fame more than ten years later with the publication in Analog of ‘Dune World’ and ‘The Prophet of Dune’ that were amalgamated in the novel Dune in 1965.

Reviews

There were a few slow parts, but the one thing that Heretics of Dune Audiobook mp3 does very well is the worldbuilding. It is a throwback to the mystery, espionage, court intrigue, and machinations of the original Dune.

The plot is dense and full of complexities that leave me desiring to start from the beginning as soon as I finish. There is always a feeling of more lying just beneath the surface; a feeling I love.

Don’t expect a clean ending in this one. Many of the subplots will be developed in the following audiobook. Heretics introduces us to a new Dune universe that will be expanded (but possibly not fully explained) in the final novel. There are many interesting characters too.

Again, Frank Herbert did a ridiculous amount of research before writing this book. It shows how he truly understands the mechanics of economics, politics, and religion.

Narration

The narration was wonderful. Simon Vance and Scott Brick – The excellent readers who did a great job.

They’ve finally let Simon Vance do all the narrating, as he should have been from the start, in my opinion, and as grateful as I am for his superb job, I must say that his voice takes on what I think is an overly exaggerated effeminate quality at parts, not only for some of the female characters but in narration as well.

Overall, it worked well and was an enjoyable listen, and it did not get in the way of the book and may have even helped.
