About A Knight of the Word Audiobook

A Knight of the Word is a fantasy audiobook by American writer Terry Brooks, the second book in the Word & Void series, a prequel to his Shannara series.

The setting is primarily Seattle, Washington around Halloween in 2002, five years after the events of Running with the Demon. The story follows John Ross as he attempts to leave his service to the Word, while Nest Freemark tries to restore his faith. It is followed by the novel Angel Fire East.

About The Word and the Void

The Word & Void series (also called The Word and The Void) focuses on John Ross and Nest Freemark, forced acquaintances who use magic given to them from the Word to prevent mankind from being overcome by the demonic forces of the Void.

It follows Nest Freemark, a girl with magical abilities who has no known relationship to any Shannara character. Before the publication of Armageddon’s Children, it was unclear whether this trilogy existed within the Shannara universe. It has since been revealed as the “ultimate prequel” to the Shannara novels.

Plot Summary

A no-holds-barred battle between Good and Evil…

Eight centuries ago, the first Knight of the Word was commissioned to combat the demonic evil of the Void. Now that daunting legacy has passed to John Ross – along with powerful magic and the knowledge that his actions are all that stand between a living hell and humanity’s future.

Then, after decades of service to the Word, an unspeakable act of violence shatters John Ross’s weary faith. Haunted by guilt, he turns his back on his dread gift, settling down to build a normal life, untroubled by demons and nightmares.

But a fallen Knight makes a tempting prize for the Void, which could bend the Knight’s magic to its own evil ends. And once the demons on Ross’s trail track him to Seattle, neither he nor anyone close to him will be safe. His only hope is Nest Freemark, a college student who wields an extraordinary magic all her own. Five years earlier, Ross had aided Nest when the future of humanity rested upon her choice between Word and Void. Now Nest must return the favor. She must restore Ross’s faith or his life – and hers – will be forfeit…

Audiobook review

Number two in the Terry Brooks urban fantasy series doesn’t disappoint. I didn’t like it quite as much as the first, but it was pretty close.

That audiobook was a bit of a slog but showed enough that I decided to continue the series. A Knight of the Word AUdiobook Mp3 is a writing of the highest level. Fast-paced, intricate, fluid.

In this book Mr. Brooks takes us on an adventure that has a wonderful hunt throughout the text as we try to figure out who is the bad guy (or gal). Hints as to this person’s identity abound and just when you think you have it all figured out Brooks drops a wrench into the works and you’re back at the guessing game again. It was a wonderful way to involve me (or you, the reader) in the story making it personal and oh so imperative that “we” figure out who the bad folks are before the end comes.

Wonderful. Simply wonderful.
