As an adult I’ve found many YA stories entertaining and Rick’s audiobooks are no exception. I used to play a video game in the apple 2 as a kid that was a Greek good adventure writer and this reminds me of that. Fun. (Nathan)

The formerly glorious god Apollo, cast down to earth in punishment by Zeus, is now an awkward mortal teenager named Lester Papadopoulos. In order to regain his place on Mount Olympus, Lester must restore five Oracles that have gone dark.

But he has to achieve this impossible task without having any godly powers and while being duty-bound to a confounding young daughter of Demeter named Meg. Thanks a lot, Dad.

With the help of some demigod friends, Lester managed to survive his first two trials, one at Camp Half-Blood, and one in Indianapolis, where Meg received the Dark Prophecy. Oh, The Burning Maze Mp3 makes me laugh, cry and pretty much every feeling in between. It feels both dark yet light at the same time. I know there has been death in this series and Riordan’s books before but this book really hurts. Yet the humor and heart are still there too. I continue to feel that this series will forever alter the characters from the previous series and this series too.

I love how he’s been handing Apollo’s character. Meg is wonderful as usual. Lots of cameos from the other series. Riordan continues to write interesting and engaging characters.

There’re so many twists and turns in this audiobook and I dare say it’s a real tearjerking and groundbreaking book that got me crazy with I finished. The cadence is very perfect and made me laugh so many times.

The best of all is the development of the main characters after what they have been through making me so proud.

If you like fighting mythological creatures and impossible quests that lead to more impossible quests and more fighting mythological creatures, you will thoroughly dig this sequel.

By the end of the audiobook you’ll need the help of Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory, just to recall when Apollo and friends fought the giant serpent, when they were set upon by pits of smaller venomous snakes or weird creatures with faces below their armpits, or by Germani soldiers, or by helmeted fighting ostriches. It’s all big fun, but it does blur together after a while.

There’s less focus on character development here than in the first book, The Hidden Oracle, mostly because Apollo has already accepted his fate as a tortured mortal. His endearing relationship with Meg, his polar opposite, continues to develop on the sidelines of all the action.

And the dedication of the ex-hunter couple Emmie and Jo to their mortal life as parents in the Waystation adds nice depth to the story. Blink, and you’ll miss it, though. The Dark Prophecy is back to the action quicker than one of Artemis’ Hunters can draw her bow.

The novel

The novel received positive reviews. Many highlighted the novel as an enjoyable continuation of Riordan’s previous work. April Spisak, wrote in The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books that “Riordan fans will find all of the key elements here: wisecracking narration, underdog kid turned hero… mythological core, and robust side characters”. In the same way, The Guardian highlighted Riordan’s ability to “inject humor, even during sad moments” into his writing.

The Hidden Oracle Audiobook’s narration by the god Apollo was also praised, described as a major change from earlier books. Karen Rought of Hypable lauded Riordan’s presentation of the story through a god rather than his usual perspective of a demigod, commenting: “seeing Percy Jackson from a former god’s point of view is both hilarious and enchanting”.

The Hidden Oracle Audiobook was well received. Publishers Weekly commented that “Robbie Daymond’s narration is delightful: lively and comical, he perfectly captures the lovably conceited and pompous Apollo”.
