The Golden Compass Audiobook (also know as Northern Lights Audiobook in the UK) is a young-adult fantasy novel by Philip Pullman and the first book of the His Dark Materials Audiobook trilogy.

The audiobook is set in a world dominated by an international theocracy, the Magisterium (also commonly called “the Church”), which actively suppresses heresy. In this world, humans’ souls naturally exist outside of their bodies in the form of sentient “dæmons”, talking animal spirits that constantly accompany, aid, and comfort their humans.

Children’s dæmons can freely and instantaneously change their appearance into that of any real or mythical creature; during puberty, however, their dæmons settle into one permanent form.

Plot Summary

Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal – including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world.

Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want.

But what Lyra doesn’t know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other…

Why should you listen to The Golden Compass?

The Golden Compass Audiobook Mp3 is an absolute work of pure genius and is in my top ten listen of all time. Like The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials that define the genre. This is high praise indeed, and this novel is worthy of it.

The world-building here is so creative and so different from other fantasy novels. After reading a lot of fantasy novels with my son, at some point I get bored of the traditional storyline of wizard fights some sort of evil and prevails. In this world, every person is born joined to a Daemon, which is an animal who talks and basically always stays within ten feet of the person. They are bonded forever, and part of being a whole human is being bonded from birth to death with this talking animal.

There’s also a huge theme here about physics, which they call “Dark Matter” or “Dust” – that creates a mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the book. There are also such creative creatures, including armored polar bears who talk and are mercenaries for hire.

There are witches, who live for thousands of years and exist within clans. And the Daemons are fascinating. They can change shape at will into any animal basically until their human hits puberty, at which point they pick one animal shape to maintain for the rest of their lives.

The Golden Compass also retains all the classic elements of fantasy: magic, mythical creatures and supernatural phenomena. The world Pullman has created is physically intertwined with our own; there are references to cities and countries in which his idea has been planted.

The author manages to surprise the reader on several occasions as he drops several, massive plot turns. This sees the story go into unexpected directions.

This is one of those audiobooks that is applicable to all ages; it originally appears to be a children’s audiobook, but it can be enjoyed by anyone.

  1. Hey friend – the Golden Compass doesn’t seem to be working 🙁
Can’t wait to listen to this after listening to Lockwood & Co, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings!

  2. Thank you so much for providing us with free audiobooks, I don’t have much time to read nowadays but this way I can enjoy what I love! I appreciate it so much! I just wish there were more one-shot books.

      • Personally I’m into fantasy, medieval fantasy, murder and crime mysteries. Would be nice if you put some of the newer books like “The Girl Outside: A Shocking and Gripping Psychological Thriller”, “The Daughter of Doctor Moreau”, “The Pallbearers Club” more of Neil Gaiman’s books as I’ve listened to all of the ones you have here and loved them, Terry Pratchett’s as well… I’d love to listen to “The Shannara Chronicles” too, and more Sherlock Holmes would be a good addition to your collection as there are plenty of stories I haven’t finished yet. The website Goodreads is a good place to find interesting books with regular updates of new ones. It’s sweet of you to reply and show interest in how you could build and improve your website, thank you! <3
