The Giver Audiobook by Lois Lowry
The Giver is an American young adult dystopian audiobook by Lois Lowry, has become one of the most influential novels of our time.
It is set in a society which at first appears to be utopian but is revealed to be dystopian as the story progresses. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, the world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.
Plot Summary
December is the time of the annual Ceremony at which each twelve-year-old receives a life assignment determined by the Elders. Jonas watches his friend Fiona named Caretaker of the Old and his cheerful pal Asher labeled the Assistant Director of Recreation. But Jonas has been chosen for something special. When his selection leads him to an unnamed man, the man called only the Giver, he begins to sense the dark secrets that underlie the fragile perfection of his world.
Told with deceptive simplicity, this is the provocative story of a boy who experiences something incredible and undertakes something impossible. In the telling, it questions every value we have taken for granted and reexamines our most deeply held beliefs.
Audiobook Review
The Giver Audiobook Mp3 is a great introduction to utopian novels. It was very interesting listening to the book with my children.
The author makes real abstract concepts, such as the meaning of a life in which there are virtually no choices to be made and no experiences with deep feelings. This tightly plotted story and its believable characters will stay with readers for a long time.
This audiobook is perhaps the best refutation that I have seen in some time of a common philosophy of pain that is sometimes found in the popular media and in some versions of Buddhism.
According to this philosophy, pain is the ultimate evil, and so, to eliminate pain and suffering we must give up desire, and individuality. Self is an illusion, and leads to pain; desire and agency are dangerous, so we should give them up and join the cosmic oneness “enlightenment” to find a utopia without pain.
The narration, the story, the author, the symbolism, the critic, the political discourse, all on this book is perfect!
