Wizard’s Second Rule
Stone of Tears Audiobook reveals the Wizard’s Second Rule: The greatest harm can result from the best intentions. (Chapter 63, p. 634, U.S. hardcover edition)
It is explained in the audiobook as follows: “It sounds a paradox, but kindness and good intentions can be an insidious path to destruction. Sometimes doing what seems right is wrong, and can cause harm. The only counter to it is knowledge, wisdom, forethought, and understanding the First Rule. Even then, that is not always enough. […] Violation can cause anything from discomfort, to disaster, to death.”

He asked to see the book and he liked it. He showed it to a number of publishers. Three of them had an auction. Ten weeks after I’d written ‘The End’ it sold for a record price ($275,000),” the most money ever paid for a fantasy novel by a first time author.

Plot Summary
Wizard’s First Rule Audiobook by Terry Goodkind is the quest story of young Richard Cypher, who must find three magic boxes mentioned in a secret book of his father’s. If he does not, the evil lord Darken Rahl will gain power over the living and the underworld, plunging the world into a reign of terror. Along the way Richard must outsmart an evil queen, a tribe of cannibals and a witch woman, as well as several magical beasts. He is aided by Kahlan, a beautiful but mysterious stranger, his wise elderly friend Zedd and his ally Chase, a huge, fierce boundary warden.
After his father’s brutal murder, Richard searches for clues to the killer. He happens to meet a beautiful young woman being pursued by three men in the forest. Richard helps Kahlan hide from the men and when they are attacked the two youths kill the four brawny men. Richard takes Kahlan to meet his elderly friend Zedd. Kahlan recognizes Zedd as the great wizard for whom she has been searching. Zedd realizes that Kahlan is a powerful Confessor and he names Richard Seeker of the Truth. They must stop the evil Darken Rahl from gathering all three of the boxes of Orden and opening the one that will give him power over everything living and dead, for good or evil.
The trio visit Richard’s friend Chase, who agrees to take them through a pass in the boundary to The Midlands. On the way, Chase and Zedd are injured, so Kahlan and Richard trek through the pass in the boundary alone. In The Midlands, they are accepted into the tribe of the Mud People. A council of seers sends them to Shota the witch woman, who tells Richard that Queen Milena has the final box of Orden, but will not have it long.
Kahlan and Richard, accompanied by wizard Zedd, travel to Queen Milena’s castle in Tamarang, encountering a young orphan named Rachel along the way. There, they learn that the wizard Giller has sacrificed his life to save the box from Darken Rahl. After leaving, they encounter Chase with Rachel, and learn that the little girl has the third box of Orden hidden in a loaf of bread. They rush the box to the protection of an army headed by Richard’s brother Michael.
Richard is captured by a Mord-Sith and horribly tortured. He tells Darken Rahl that the Book of Counted Shadows, the guide to opening the boxes of Orden, has been destroyed. However, Richard admits that he has memorized the contents of the book. To save Kahlan’s life, Richard decides to help the evil Darken Rahl gain dominion over all things, living and dead. At the last minute, Richard leaves out a crucial paragraph of the book, resulting in Rahl’s death. Richard becomes Rahl, ruler of all three lands. His love for Kahlan makes him immune to her Confessor powers and they ride a red dragon away to return the boy Siddin to his people and consummate their relationship.
Reception
Terri Windling identified Wizard’s First Rule Audiobook by Terry Goodkind as one of the best fantasy debuts of 1994, saying that although the novel was “derivative,” it “does have a certain charm and earnestness about it”. Kirkus Reviews called the novel “A wonderfully creative, seamless, and stirring epic fantasy debut.”
Booklist favorably described the Wizard’s First Rule Audiobook by Terry Goodkind as the “first volume of a saga” and favourably within the “same breath as Robert Jordon” but “hardly an aspirant to Tolkien’s mantel”. The review concludes that “the characters and their world come to life, and Goodkind’s ambitious juxtaposition of modern ambiguities and the classical fantasy setting works more often than not.” Library Journal called the audiobook “an intriguing variant on the standard fantasy quest” recommending the novel for “mature fantasy aficionados” noting the sado-eroticism of the Mord Sith might “deter purchase by some libraries”
Terry Goodkind – Author of Sword Of Truth Audiobook
Although Wizard’s First Rule Audiobook is a young adult fantasy audiobook replete with magic, kingdoms, wizards, dragons and swords, there are other scenes that some readers will find disturbing. These include the brutal murder of a young boy whose body is cannibalized. One character is a sadistic homosexual pedophile killer forced to eat his own genitals while another is a dominatrix who practices bondage and tortures the hero.

Synopsis of The Sword of Truth Audiobook
The Sword of Truth Audiobook Online Streaming Series by Terry Goodkind is set in a world divided into two major regions: the New World and the Old World. The New World consists of three lands with Westland in the west, D’Hara in the east and the Midlands in the center of the two. D’Hara is ruled by a magically gifted member of the Rahl family, while the welfare of the Midlands is decided by a council of representatives led by the Mother Confessor, who is also the leader of the Confessors. The Confessors are a group of women who each have a magical power to force a person to become entirely devoted to them, allowing them to fulfill their purpose – to find the truth. Westland, a land of no magic, is also ruled by a council of representatives. The Old World is not introduced until the second book in the series and its geographical features are described in less detail.
The main character is a young man named Richard Cypher, a Westland woods guide whose simple life is forever changed after he becomes the Seeker of Truth – a position similar to that of a Confessor, requiring him to uphold justice in the world. Over the course of the series, Richard learns about his heritage while seeking to stop the evil that others would unleash upon the world of the living. Because Richard refuses to sacrifice his values and lives his life as a free man, others begin to understand the nobility of man and what it means to be free. Each book is loosely themed around a Wizard’s Rule, tenets by which all wizards should abide. The eleventh full-length novel, Confessor, concludes the series’ central story arc regarding the invasion of the Imperial Order, an empire in the Old World led by Jagang. Warheart was the last novel in the series.

The Sword of Truth #8: Naked Empire Audiobook (23 Hours) – Read By Jim Bond
Naked Empire Audiobook – The Sword of Truth Book 8
”You knew they were there, didn’t you?” Kahlan asked in a hushed tone as she leaned closer.” ”Against the darkening sky, she could just make out the shapes of three black-tipped races taking to wing, beginning their nightly hunt. That was why he’d stopped. That was what he’d been watching as the rest of them waited in uneasy silence.” ””Yes,” Richard said. He gestured over his shoulder without turning to look. ”There are two more, back there.”” ”Kahlan briefly scanned the dark jumble of rock, but she didn’t see any others.” ”Lightly grasping the silver pommel with two fingers, Richard lifted his sword a few inches, checking that it was clear in its scabbard.
A last fleeting glimmer of amber light played across his golden cape as he let the sword drop back in place. In the gathering gloom of dusk, his familiar tall, powerful contour seemed as if it were no more than an apparition made of shadows.” ”Just then, two more of the huge birds shot by right overhead. One, wings stretched wide, let out a piercing scream as it banked into a tight gliding turn, circling once more in assessment of the five people below before stroking its powerful wings to catch its departing comrades in their swift journey west.” This night they would find ample food.
The Sword of Truth #9: Chainfire Audiobook (26 Hours) – Read By Jim Bond
”How much of this blood is his?” ”Most of it, I’m afraid,” a second woman said as they both rushed along beside him. As Richard fought to focus his mind on his need to remain conscious, the breathless voices sounded to him as if they were coming from some great dim distance.
He wasn’t sure who they were. He knew that he knew them, but right then it just didn’t seem to matter. The crushing pain in the left side of his chest and his need for air had him at the ragged edge of panic. It was all he could do to try to pull each crucial breath.
Chainfire Audiobook – The Sword of Truth Book 9
Even so, he had a bigger worry. Richard struggled to put voice to his burning concern, but he couldn’t form the words, couldn’t get out any more than a gasping moan. He clutched the arm of the woman beside him, desperate to get them to stop, to get them to listen. She misunderstood and instead urged the men carrying him to hurry, even though they already panted with the effort of bearing him over the rocky ground in the deep shade among the towering pines.
They tried to be as gentle as possible, but they never dared to slow. Not far off, a rooster crowed into the still air, as if this was an ordinary morning like any other. Richard observed the storm of activity swirling around him with an odd sense of detachment. Only the pain seemed real. He remembered hearing it once said that when you died, no matter how many people were with you, you died alone. That’s how he felt now-alone.
The Sword of Truth #10: Phantom Audiobook (23 Hours) – Read By Sam Tsoutsouvas
Phantom Audiobook – The Sword of Truth Book 10
In the eagerly awaited second volume of bestseller Goodkind’s Chainfire trilogy, star-crossed Richard Cypher (aka Lord Richard Rahl) searches for his beautiful ”phantom” wife, Kahlan Amnell, who lost her memory in 2005’s Chainfire after the Sisters of the Dark cast a spell on her.
Meanwhile, Richard has memorized a magical instruction book, The Book of Counted Shadows, which will help open the three boxes of the Orden, though the consequences could be dire for the Old World: ”Open the correct box, and one gains the power of Orden-the essence of life itself, power over all things living and dead… Open the wrong box… and every living thing in existence is incinerated into nothingness. It would be the end of all life.”
Despite the simplistic good vs. evil conflict and bland prose, the author expertly juggles many complex plot lines and brings to life a host of colorful characters.
The Sword of Truth #11: Confessor Audiobook (26 Hours) – Read By Sam Tsoutsouvas
Confessor Audiobook – The Sword of Truth Book 11
Descending into darkness, about to be overwhelmed by evil, those people still free are powerless to stop the coming dawn of a savage new world, while Richard faces the guilt of knowing that he must let it happen. Alone, he must bear the weight of a sin he dare not confess to the one person he loves?and has lost.
Join Richard and Kahlan in the concluding novel of one of the most remarkable and memorable journeys ever written. It started with one rule, and will end with the rule of all rules, the rule unwritten, the rule unspoken since the dawn of history. When next the sun rises, the world will be forever changed.
Wizard’s Rules
A thread woven through The Sword of Truth Audiobook Series by Terry Goodkind are the 11 “Wizard’s Rules”, which are practical teachings given to young wizards.
Wizard’s First Rule: “People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it’s true, or because they’re afraid it might be true. Peoples’ heads are full of knowledge, facts and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool.”
Wizard’s Second Rule: “The Second Rule is that the greatest harm can result from the best intentions.”
Wizard’s Third Rule: “Passion rules reason.”
Wizard’s Fourth Rule: “The Wizard’s Fourth Rule, he called it. He said that there was magic in sincere forgiveness, in the Fourth Rule. Magic to heal. In forgiveness you grant, and more so in the forgiveness you receive.”
Wizard’s Fifth Rule: “Mind what people do, not only what they say, for deeds will betray a lie.”
Wizard’s Sixth Rule: “The most important rule there is, the Wizard’s Sixth Rule: the only sovereign you can allow to rule you is reason. The first law of reason is this: what exists, exists, what is, is and from this irreducible bedrock principle, all knowledge is built. It is the foundation from which life is embraced. Thinking is a choice. Wishes and whims are not facts nor are they a means to discover them. Reason is our only way of grasping reality; it is our basic tool of survival. We are free to evade the effort of thinking, to reject reason, but we are not free to avoid the penalty of the abyss that we refuse to see. Faith and feelings are the darkness to reasons light. In rejecting reason, refusing to think, one embraces death.”
Wizard’s Seventh Rule: “Life is the future, not the past. The past can teach us, through experience, how to accomplish things in the future, comfort us with cherished memories, and provide the foundation of what has already been accomplished. But only the future holds life. To live in the past is to embrace what is dead. To live life to its fullest, each day must be created anew. As rational, thinking beings, we must use our intellect, not a blind devotion to what has come before, to make rational choices.”
Wizard’s Ninth Rule: “A contradiction can not exist in reality. Not in part, nor in whole. To believe in a contradiction is to abdicate your belief in the existence of the world around you and the nature of the things in it, to instead embrace any random impulse that strikes your fancy – to imagine something is real simply because you wish it were. A thing is what it is, it is itself. There can be no contradictions. Faith is a device of self-delusion, a sleight of hand done with words and emotions founded on any irrational notion that can be dreamed up. Faith is the attempt to coerce truth to surrender to whim. In simple terms, it is trying to breath life into a lie by trying to outshine reality with the beauty of wishes. Faith is the refuge of fools, the ignorant, and the deluded, not of thinking, rational men. In reality, contradictions cannot exist. To believe in them you must abandon the most important thing you possess: your rational mind. The wager for such a bargain is your life. In such an exchange, you always lose what you have at stake.”
Wizard’s Tenth Rule: “Willfully turning aside from the truth is treason to one’s self.”
Wizard’s Eleventh Rule: “The rule of all rules. The rule unwritten. The rule unspoken since the dawn of history… But Barracus wanted you to know that it’s the secret to using a war wizard’s power. The only way to express it, to make sure that you would grasp what he was intending to tell you, was to give you a book unwritten to signify the rule unwritten.”

James describes the series as her “fantasies…and that’s it.” She is excited about how successful the series has been and when asked about what she planned to write next, replied, “…who knows?”

Magical Narratives Unveiled: Your Free Harry Potter Audiobook Adventure
Hey there, fellow bookworms! Today, I want to talk to you about something near and dear to my heart – the Harry Potter audiobooks. If you’re a fan of magical adventures, you’re in for a real treat.
For those of you who might have been living under a rock (or just in a Muggle world), Harry Potter is the brainchild of the brilliant British author, J. K. Rowling. It’s a series of fantasy novels that have taken the world by storm, and let me tell you, the audiobooks are a fantastic way to experience the magic all over again.
Now, what’s the story all about, you ask? Well, it follows the epic journey of a young wizard named Harry Potter, along with his trusty friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. These three pals are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and their adventures are nothing short of spellbinding. But it’s not all quidditch matches and butterbeer – oh no. At the heart of it, Harry is faced with the daunting task of taking on the one and only Voldemort, the darkest and most powerful wizard of all time.
What’s truly remarkable about the Harry Potter audiobooks is how they’ve captured the hearts of readers both young and old. The series first hit the shelves on June 30, 1997, and it didn’t take long for it to become a global phenomenon. To put it mildly, it’s a literary sensation. The books have sold over 450 million copies worldwide, and they’ve been translated into a staggering 73 languages! To top it all off, the last four books set records as the fastest-selling books in history.
But that’s not all, my friends. The magic didn’t stop on the page. Warner Bros. Pictures turned all seven books into an eight-part film series, which went on to become one of the highest-grossing film series of all time. And there’s even more. The Harry Potter brand is worth over $15 billion, thanks to all the merchandise, theme parks, and more. It’s like the Wizarding World has stepped right into our own.
And guess what? There’s more to the tale. A two-part play called “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” hit the stage at the Palace Theatre on July 30, 2016. It’s a collaboration between J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany, and let me tell you, it’s an incredible addition to the story. The play’s script was released in both print and digital formats on July 31, 2016.
So, my fellow Potterheads, if you want to dive back into the enchanting world of Harry Potter, you’re in luck. You can listen to the audiobooks, watch the movies, visit the theme parks, or even catch a live performance. The magic never ends, and that’s what makes this series truly special.
And hey, if you’re as much of a fan as I am, you can always download the entire audiobook series from the web to enjoy the magical journey all over again. Happy listening, and may the magic of Harry Potter always be with you!
